Public Meeting
Ore Knob Mine NPL Site, Laurel Springs, Ashe County
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold a public meeting on Thursday, November 4, 2010 regarding this site. Staff from the EPA, the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the North Carolina Division of Public Health (DPH) will provide information about the cleanup, upcoming activities at the site and the Health Risk Assessment report. The public meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Peak Creek Community Bldg., 717 Little Peak Creek Rd., Laurel Springs, NC.

Samples of fish and shellfish were collected near the site and will be evaluated for potential health effects. The sampling was done through a collaboration between the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Division of Water Quality and Division of Marine Fisheries, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Health Consultation
Staff from the Occupational and Epidemiology Branch contacted all residences where there was a potential for health effects. A total of 10 families were contacted by phone and mail.

Greensboro Landfills
(White Street Municipal Landfill and EH Glass Dumpsite
Future Plans:
Complete a Letter Health Consultation report to summarize the 2009 cancer risk study of the White Street Municipal Landfill.
N.C. Division of Public Health (DPH) has requested copies of chemical analysis of the samples being collected by N.C. DENR at the EH Glass dumpsite. N.C. DPH will evaluate those samples to determine whether there is a risk of exposure to chemicals on the site and if the levels could potentially cause adverse health effects for the public.
Public Availability Session: Staff from the N.C. Division of Public Health will be available to answer questions and obtain feedback about the Health Consultation report completed. The session will take place at the Person County Human Services Complex, 355A South Madison Blvd. Roxboro, from 4:00 – 7:00 pm. Community residents are encouraged to stop by at any time during those hours.
