Chemical Release Investigation Kit and Template (CRIKT)
The Chemical Release Investigation Kit & Template, also known as CRIKT, provides guidance for local health departments to use when responding to chemical releases. CRIKT is comprised of three distinct parts for each chemical of concern: a step-by-step chemical guide, a one-page chemical fact sheet, and a line listing template. The line listing template can be adapted for use with all CRIKTs and the link can be found below. A CRIKT will be developed for each chemical. Each CRIKT will ensure local health departments have easily accessible chemical information, guidance on how to respond and who to contact to best protect public health in the event of a chemical release.
Chemical releases are a public health concern in North Carolina. Data from the National Toxic Substance Incidents Program (NTSIP) shows there were a total of 854 toxic chemical releases in North Carolina from 2010-2012. Of the incidents reported, 108 resulted in one or more injuries and 109 resulted in an official evacuation. Chemical selection for inclusion in CRIKT was based on high occurrences in chemical releases in North Carolina from 2002-2012.
