Physicians, toxicologists, industrial hygienists and other professionals in Medical Evaluation and Risk Assessment (MERA):

• determine if exposure to chemicals detected in soil, groundwater, surface water or air would pose a health risk
• determine if exposure to chemicals detected in fish would pose a health risk and work to protect public health through investigation and risk analysis of fish kills
• design and conduct studies to determine the risk to human health from various environmental sources
• provide medical and toxicological evaluation of risk to human health from environmental hazards
• evaluate the impact of confined animal feeding operations on public health
• study possible public health problems caused by hazardous waste sites
• develop Groundwater Quality Standards
• develop and help carry out preparedness plans for chemical and radiological release incidents
• provide support to the State Center for Health Statistics to evaluate clusters of illness such as cancer
